Is there such a thing as a "new" heirloom?

Posted by Irish Rose Gifts on 19th Nov 2024

Giving more than "stuff" this season?

It's easy to buy gifts for new households and families. They need all the things a home needs—pots and pans, linens and tools. Electronics and toys, clothes and cupboards. Everything that makes a house manageable.

It's a little harder sometimes to hand down special items—the silver napkin rings, the medals won in a foreign war, grandma's brooch. Those are the most treasured, irreplaceable heirlooms. To pass them on to the next generation is a bittersweet privilege.

How can we honor both our past and future families during this sacred season?

Is there such a thing as a new heirloom?

Every antique treasure in your family was once new. They were lovingly chosen or handmade, carried and displayed with pride through good times and bad. Then, when the time came, they were passed on to beloved heirs, partners, or friends.

A new heirloom should be chosen with care. It can symbolize so much, and it must reach in two directions. Toward the past, for the people who made hard decisions, took long journeys, and kept promises that made everything possible for their children and their children's children. It must also reach forward, to those children now and to their children to come. New heirlooms should be classic and timeless, communicating stories that never end.

Each heirloom tells an old story to a new listener, becoming another legacy of the love that made us. We specialize in gifts that tell long stories, but we'd like to hear what your new heirlooms are.
